{"id":59183,"date":"2018-11-12T18:41:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T18:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aphw.com\/?p=59183"},"modified":"2018-11-12T18:55:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T18:55:39","slug":"aphw-employee-veteran-husband-volunteer-for-veterans-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aphw.house\/windermere\/aphw-employee-veteran-husband-volunteer-for-veterans-day\/","title":{"rendered":"APHW Employee &#038; Veteran Husband Volunteer for Veterans Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aphw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/VeteransDayVolunteers.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/aphw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/VeteransDayVolunteers-1024x380.jpg\" alt=\"Veteran's Day Volunteers\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are more than 20 U.S. veteran suicides every day. <em>Every day.<\/em> This statistic disproportionally affects older veterans, such as those who served in the Vietnam War, who found they weren\u2019t welcome back home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were spit on, yelled at, cursed\u2026 most of us took off our uniforms and never spoke of our service again,\u201d said Mike Jambor, a U.S. Army veteran and husband to America\u2019s Preferred Home Warranty (APHW) Area Sales Manager Team Leader Kathy Jambor. Veterans like Mike came home before there was help for people with PTSD. \u201cIt was very clear to me that Mike was majorly impacted by his service when he returned,\u201d Kathy said. \u201cReturning to civilian life was really challenging for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Times Have Changed<\/h4>\n<p>Fast forward 20 years, and these two have found their place together\u2014not just as part of society but as members of <a href=\"https:\/\/bandofrunners.org\/\">Band of Runners<\/a>, a non-profit organization which helps veterans and their surviving family members heal through trail running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we got the opportunity to enhance the lives of our returning veterans through physical and social activity, we jumped in with both feet,\u201d Mike said.<\/p>\n<h4>Veteran&#8217;s Day Weekend<\/h4>\n<p>Kathy and Mike signed up as volunteers for the Band of Runners Annual Veterans Day Weekend Trail Running Camp, with high hopes of making a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink of how isolating it would have been for those who came home with combat-related stress or injuries, plus the impact that had on their families,\u201d Mike said. \u201cThe purpose of the trail camp is to introduce veterans\u2014and surviving family members who have suffered the loss of a soldier\u2014to the therapeutic benefits of trail running and the trail running community. It\u2019s so welcoming and supportive, and if we save one person by connecting them to their community, those positive ripples go out forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aphw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181111_113347317.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/aphw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_20181111_113347317-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Band of Runners Team\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what happens at these camps,\u201d Kathy said. \u201cIt\u2019s just a whole different level of connecting with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Mike and Kathy have gained immeasurably from these experiences in volunteering. \u201cVeterans are such a valuable asset to our communities and, by extension, our country,\u201d Mike said. \u201cThese people understand service, loyalty, integrity, teamwork\u2026 we owe them an assist back into the larger community after their service.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Veterans Crisis Line<\/h4>\n<p>If you or someone you know is a Veteran in crisis, call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1.800.273.8255 or text 838255.
